A Question For John - Foil Master

Hi John,

I've been curious about this FoilMaster ever since you mentioned it.
Do they print on different types of paper/card as well, or just Foil?
In fact, I don't think they're out here yet!
I'd be interested to know!

I sincerely hope your Norma is okay, and well looked after.

Thanks.
Belinda

Hello Belinda. They are an absolutely brilliant machine. You have to purchase the foil. The machine itself cost me £125.00. You print out your image,or sentiment in a laser printer.or a mono Photocopier. You cannot do it from a inkjet printer. It just won't work. When you have printed out your sentiment, you then place the very thin film of foil over the printed image and cover it with a sheet of paper. This sandwich of paper above and below the card is then run through the Hot foiling machine. Give it about 5 mins' or so and remove the covering paper. Peel the foil away from your image and HEY PRESTO! Your image is now foiled. It's BEAUTIFUL!! I love it!! There are so many wonderful glistening colours to choose from; Gold, Silver, Various shades of Red, Copper, Bronze, Green, Blue, Pink, Etc, Etc. Etc. There are even lots of holographic foils. The list seems almost endless. Sorry if I've gone on a bit, Belinda. but I am over the moon with it all. I really love it. Take care Belinda and keep smiling, John

PS. It foils on card, or paper! Whichever you have printed your very black image on. The black toner apparently sticks to the foil, or vice versa. You will probably find videos of it on You Tube.

I have been doing exactly the same thing for years but with just using a normal laminater on the highest heat setting. It is the heat that makes the foil stick to the toner. I have to get special toner friendly foil. I sell my foiled sheets on my web site and they sell really well.
Because I hate peel off stickers so much this is ideal for me and the finished result is more proffessional

I used to foil all my cards like that years ago but used a very low tack masking tape to secure the foil to my card!! The toner is a powder which melts at hot temperatures and acts like a glue for the release foils. Tonertex sell a lovely selection of beautiful foils too. The only thing I did differently to you John was that I used a normal common garden laminator .... which cost a lot less than £125! lol

Exactly Carol, you do not need to pay a lot of money for a very expensive machine when a normal laminater does the trick just as good

Thanks John!
I WANT ONE! For me it would be double in pounds, so $250 (that's a week's rent for someone if they're lucky, here)... so coz I'm a music teacher I might have to save... oh well, so do we do a trip to Fiji or the Foil Master!!!
I know what hubby would say... NEITHER!!! Nah joking.
I sincerely hope you are both being looked after.
Warmest wishes,
Belinda

There is only one draw back with hot foiling on a laminator.......if you print out something on a laser printer and only want just a tiny bit of foil somewhere thats 'in' the graphic part or only on text that is on a background you cant as it will adhere to anywhere the toner is.

We actually have a printer that uses rolls of foil and you indicate before you print on something where you want it to print.......but being a print business, that machine would be out of most peoples cost range. You print the image on the laser then put it through the foil printer and it just 'prints' on the parts/text you want foiled.

There are also 'pens' that will do hot foil on laser print. They heat up and you can just to parts of a graphic or just text......don't know much about them but I'd love to try them.

But yes like the others have said.........a laminator will do the hotfoil just as well as the foiling maching if its a clear defined section you want foiled.

I love playing with all the pretty foils

Some time ago I bought a hot foil pen but now can't use it because it requires a certain amount of pressure and my hands aren't up to it any more. So I too had my heart set on a hot foil machine but having spent £90 on the pen my conscience (and my pocket) won't let me do it, and in any case the machine is quite large and I haven't the space for it. But I am very interested in foiling by laminator as those machines are smaller and cheaper and will serve 2 purposes. Is any one model any better than another and are there any special features that I should look for? Presumably one doesn't use a laminating pouch so how does one protect the foil - or doesn't it need protecting? I shall be very grateful for any guidance.
