Computer Program allowing you to print sentiments

I have today been to a Craft Fair and seen home-made cards which show the card sentiment printed directly onto the card before making the card up. These looked so professional and the lady who had made the cards was not available to answer my questions.

Does anyone know of any such programs, and if so, what they are?

Can anyone give me some guide on this.

I think you should be able to set up a template in just about any software such as a graphics program, or Word, Publisher, etc., to position the greeting where you want depending your your card size. Your biggest problem would be the printing of the greeting to a professional standard on the card. Depending on the finish of the card I think a lot of those with a printed greeting on the base card itself (and quite often the details of the card maker is printed on the back at the same time) may have a lazer printer. Whichever type of printer is used we already know that lots of printers are not happy with heavyweight cardstock, and if the base card has a score line on it, even if it isn't pre-folded, it can be another problem for the printer. They may even be stamping the greeting onto the base card. Not having seen the cards you saw it's difficult to say how this lady did hers. Did you manage to get her name or details off any of her cards or the person who was selling the cards for her?

Hi Gwyneth, No I didn't manage to talk to her, but her friend is in UK and I have spoken to her already on Skype. Unfortunately the fair is only on tomorrow and I have a doctors appointment and other things not allowing me to go back to the craft fair and ask. it is quite a journey from here. Never thought she may have had a lazer printer, but that is a possibility as she had a shop at one point. I can only hope that something comes up.

Thanks, carol

I print most of my text directly on to my cards unless of course there is an insert. My printer is an inkjet and I design and place everything in Illustrator. If I have text on both sides of the cards I print one side then the other. I think my printer can print double-sided but not used this facility as my last printer had it and it took forever to print anything.

If I have a lot of pages to do I would design them in Adobe Indesign and if it is a booklet I can click on a button and all the pages are sorted in to the correct order for printing and they can all be numbered then.

If it is two pages you want to print back to back design your front sheet in one document then design the other sheet in another document and then print making sure you put the paper in correctly.

It is a good idea to take a sheet of paper first and fold it in half to act as your card then write out roughly what you want and where and this will help you get the text on the correct side of the page because often enough you type something out then print it and it is in the wrong place or wrong side of the page.

This is an example – if you have a front and back page in front of you, you automatically would type the front page on the left and the back page on the right but in actual fact you should type the front page on the right and the back page on the left. If you can make a sample up first it will always help with placing your items on the page.

You should be able to use word or something similar to type your pages up.

Yes I there is software for this purpose.........I cant remember where I saw/read it........I'm thinking it MAY have been a Serif program but cant be 100% sure on that.

But if you know your way round your graphics program, or even Publisher (MS Office) you can print direct to your card.

That being said.......your printer needs to be able to print on the card stock your using. And also as Gwenyth said.....prescored card COULD be an issue feeding through.

As with inj/bubble jet printers they all run the risk of smearing so whether the sentiment/verse was printed like that is probably of little consequence. Unless you use textured paper, it may not come out as crisp possibly.

Laser printers dont have the issues of smearing/running....but again textures may be an issue.

I've used Publisher for years to print cards, invitations, stationery on various paper and card stocks but we use a laser and we have one that will take 300gsm without having a hissy fit. When printing out 300 invitations it can be time consuming as its a individual manual feed process!!!! But the results are stunning!!
So definately look into getting Publisher.......it really is easy to place things where you want, then turn and refeed through to print the other side with things lined up perfectly!!! They even give various blank templates for you to use so you know its going to be right!!!

I 'think' also I have seen something advertised on newsletters possibly from IW or C&C.

If I find where I saw it I'll post here.

Yes, but there is a rule here that we cannot give out the name of another craft programme. However I will PM you, I think that may be alright(?)

I sell card kits on my own website with text boxes all set up ready for you to type your verses into - by using PDFs - and I have always used an inkjet printer for my samples. Unfortunately jpgs cannot be set up with this facility so what you buy off CUP can not be set up like this.

I know we aren't allowed to 'advertise' other craft SITES John but I think we are allowed to give the names of computer software/programs that we use on our own computers.

Its no different to saying we use Adobe Photoshop or CS or Corel PSP.
Its nothing that is in 'competition' with what CUP is all about.

I would have thought that any programme that handles .jpegs you should be able to put in your text before printing out? I woud download whatever it is I bought from CUP, open it in a graphics programme, add my text and save it - using a different name so you don't muck up the original file, then print it out.

The only other thought that occured to me is - if the text was in a metallic finish then maybe the lady used a hot foil printer which is a small machine used just for adding the text or embellishment.

That certainly makes sense Vicki. You are, of course, quite right. John.
