Boxes

Hi all. I want to make a box to fit a 5" square card. I've got a score board so I'm ok from that point of view just can't work out the measurements.

Is there anyone out there who can put me on the right track please?

Many thanks

Hi Tracey

What depth do you want the box, and do you want the box lid edge to come all the way to the bottom of the base, or only part way down?

Which score board do you have? Some make it easier than others to make boxes as some are marked with standard score lines for specific card sizes, whereas others are marked in cm or inches. Some even come with guidesheets of the size of card you need and the lines you need to score for specific projects.

I tend to make the box a little larger than the card that's to fit in it - so, for example, say I wanted a 1" deep quick box for a 5" square I'd add 2 x 1" (for both sides) to 5.25" for my card size. So I'd take two pieces of heavyweight card 7.25" squares and score it at 1" in from all four sides for the base, and score at a "smidge" (very technical term that LOL) less than 1" in from all sides for the top. I'd then just cut in at each corner and stick the flaps in place.

I tend to use my Hoogieboard if I'm making quick items like this. I'm sure that you'll get many more suggestions as other cardmakers here are sure to have their own methods.

Thanks Gwyneth. I saw on C&C yesterday Nancy Watt made a star card where she used 5 or 6 4" square cards, decorated the inside of them all and then stuck the backs together and added ribbon to the front and back where you can tie it so it kind of looks like a book. I want to make one for my cousin who is getting married next week. The card part isn't a problem except I want to make it a bit bigger say 5" but would like to put it in a presentation box to give it that wow factor. Hope that makes sense!

The score board I have is an Eazi score board, can't afford a Hougie at the moment and yes I would like the lid to cover the box totally.

Thanks

First: I would make up a practice template in ordinary paper to to make sure I have the dimensions right, before committing to card.
The box should have a base, just a little bigger than the 'card'. Off each side of the base add a rectangle that goes just a little higher than the 'card'. Add glue tabs to the side of these projections. One per joint should do, but may wish to add extra tabs to the template so you can decide which ones you need. A lid can be created in the same way, just expand the 'base' by a couple of mm so it will fit over the main box.
If you work with a paper template you may also discover how to make an attaching lid - I tried to add a photo of one I made to take some silk squares -

Hope this helps.
