| Epson sx200 - card thickness?
To date I've only used paper and photo paper in my printer, which is an Epson SX200. I'd love to use card but am hesitant to buy any A4 to go in the printer as I don't know what weight/thickness will go through...with all these gorgeous kits, easel cards and shelf cards, it would be so much easier to print directly onto the card!
Does anyone have the same model printer and have any pointers for the best weight/thickness of card to get for it please?
Many thanks!
Michelle

Hi Michelle, bad news for you honey xx I have an Epson Sx215 and it hates taking card with a passion !! I have found that I have to "help" card through the printer, just put a little bit of pressure on the top of the card that is next to go through, it doesn't always work though. On a good note though getting ink for it is so cheap if you go to the right place. I get my refils at just over £4 for the full set from diskdepot, I also get my matte photo paper from there too Sorry to be the bearer of bad news TC Diane xx

Have a look in your printer settings and see if it has a setting for Heavy Paper or Card. That will give a indication of whether it will take it or not.
It should be somewhere in Preferences in the Paper part.
Depending on what size you want to use but up to 200gsm it should go through (maybe with a bit of a push as Diane suggested).
Above that will depend whether the printer has a setting for it.

The maximum card that goes through my HP printer is about 240gsm. The only Epson I ever owned would only accept Photocard/paper, otherwise the print was total rubbish. Added to which it would accept compatibles, and the proper cartridges cost almost as much as the printer. True I use proper cartridges in my HP, but at least I can refill the things a couple of times, which does reduce the costs.
Top loaders, which most, if not all Epson's are, should take not only card, but most other stuff as well, including the wood sheets from Crafty Computer Paper. Sadly my HP's have always been bottom loaders, which won't take heavy card. Pain in the wotsit that as I would have liked to print directly onto watercolour paper. No matter, there are ways around that. |

Hi Diane, I noticed you mentioned diskdepot which is in Dundee. OMG their prices are cheap. What is the ink like? Does it leak at all. Once when I was working we had an epson printer and we bought compatibles. They leaked all over the printer, what a nightmare.
I have noticed that they sell compatibles for my printer, but I am a bit dubious as my printer takes 'clarion ink' which is some special type of ink but it does not say that is what it is.
Last thing, the paper, which matte paper do you buy. I see they sell 180 gsm. Do you know if this has a coating on the back as well or is it just like normal card. Is there a limit to how much you are allowed to spend? Any answer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I've got a wireless Kodak all-in-one & have put 300gsm through it with no problem. I regularly print on 230gsm white card & 190gsm glossy photo stuff.
It takes 1 colour & 1 black cartridge which retail for approx £20 & is sold in the usual places plus my local Tescos which means I just pick it up with the shopping.
I haven't worked it out properly but I would estimate that we buy a new pack every 4 - 6 weeks. I don't know if this seems a lot or not but considering the printer is used by the whole family for school work/projects I don't consider it bad.

I have the epson stylus photo 1400 which is an A3 printer and I print on to 280/290/300 gsm most of the time as I like to use thick card for my projects. It will take it no problem. The only thing is that the ink is quite expensive but have noticed a website selling compatible for it. Am waiting for Diane to reply re compatible ink and how she has found this particular company she uses.
The 1400 I think is going to be withdrawn soon so you might be able to get it a bit cheaper. When I bought mine I think it was approx £300. I know I have seen it in Currys for about £250. I don't know if that is too dear for you or not. The printer I had before that was the stylus photo 1290 which was another A3 printer. I think that is still sold and cheaper than the 1400 and I know you can get cheap compatible ink for that and it will take the 280/290/300 gsm card as well.
