Gsm thickness for hp printer

HELP!
My printer (I'm using a cheap Brother HP printer, which has been fine in the past)... it doesn't like 235gsm... Does anyone have suggestions about photo paper/card thickness??? I've accidentally bought the wrong thickness again!
My printer doesn't like it anymmore it's decided, it used to print fine and maybe was always a bit thick.
Should I go 220gsm, would this work?
What GSM photo-paper or any card thickness do people generally use???
Thanks!

it really depends what you want to do with the design once printed. If it is to stand alone it needs to be slightly thicker so that it does not sag when standing. I use 280/290/300 gsm. But I am fortunate in that my printer will take this thickness. You could print on to a thin paper, maybe 120, 160 gsm and stick it to some cardstock but if you do that I would recommend you buy a coated stock. This will enhance the colours no end.

It might not be the actual thickness it doesn't like, it might be something to do with the coating on the card. Maybe it is too smooth and the rollers cannot pull it in. 230 gsm is not that thick and I would imagine that most printers should be able to take this. Try placing your finger on top of the card when it goes in to help it along.

I almost always print on photo paper but my printer (HP Photosmart 2575 All-in-One) won't pull 250gsm through, despite me giving it a nudge. The rollers just go round and round like car tyres on ice! I use 210gsm but it's not ideal for stand up cards which is why, when this printer packs up, I shall buy a Canon Pixma which has had excellent reviews on this site for thicker card.

Have you checked your printer settings and had a look to see if you can set it to print thicker card?
Or try an envelope setting even, sometimes that will work even!!

I have a HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m and have had no problems with card upto the 300gsm Centura Pearl card (the only thing it won't do is automatic double sided (duplex) printing onto this heavy card). It's a bit odd it actually taking so heavy a card as it's a front loading, but I've never had any problem with it not picking up despite the manual saying that it won't cope with card of that weight of card. I had an earlier version of the HP Photosmart before this and it was also able to pick up and print onto the Centura Pearl card, and it wasn't the pickup mechanism that failed in the end. I'm wondering whether your rollers have picked up some gunk? I know that when I worked in IT support there were occasions when the technicians had to get wipe off printer rollers.

Thanks for the tips Gwyneth!
Just to change the subject, I'm now trying InfranView (the Scrapbook printing program you suggested) and wa-la it printed the first part of A4 landscape but how do I get it to print the 2nd part?!
You mentioned you used to be in IT? I think?
Help! This would be awesome if I could print this then wouldn't have to spend hundreds on a new printer!

It was Microsoft Publisher I suggested - here - for printing out pages of larger than A4 on an A4 printer, not IrfanView. Publisher has a facility to set up Banner documents and Poster documents which are both printed out over several pages with margins to allow for the pieces to be stuck together. IrfanView I suggested as a free image manipulation software, for things such as cropping and re-sizing card pictures before uploading to craftsUprint or Craftforums. IrfanView, as I said here, is good for cropping, resizing, and colour manipulation.
