Hi Bubble, I know this will sound mad but I score on both sides with a large head ball tool, then rub with wax, either beeswax also smells nice or candle, down the score line and score again using a smaller ball tool. this works for me everytime even on mirror card DO NOT BURNISH this will crinkle and force th fibres of the card out of alignment. hope this helps.

Hi Gwyneth,
I didn't get a scoring tool with my Hougie board, this must have been missing when I brought it and I didn't notice . I have quite a few embossing tools, some are plastic and some are metal, I tend to use the metal ones because they seem to run smoother. I do tend to only score a couple of time on each side, I notice that you said several time on each side. I will give this try... Thanks again.

Hi Heather,

My goodness you've just brought back a distant memory... My mum used to score a candle and slip the wool that she would buy by the hank and wind on a yarn winder. I would sit with the candle and my older brother would have the hank of wool over both hands moving side to side. The reason for this was to help stop the wool jamming in the knitting machine... Coming back to the future. I have'nt tried this but will certainly give it a go... Thank you.

You definately need to use the correct tool with the Hougie board. The board is made with score lines that are narrower than on lots of other score boards. The Hougie Score Tool looks like a bone folder but is more bendy. This is done for a reason. As you shouldn't apply full pressure the first time of scoreing, but only apply light pressure several times, if you apply too much pressure to the tool the tool bends and you know that you are applying too much pressure. If you didn't get the Hougie Score Tool with the board you should follow it up with your supplier as I believe that the board is always sold with the correct tool. They are also available on the Hougie Crafts website - here.

If you still can not get a good scoring line try and cut a piece of backing paper of some sort to match your card and place it down the middle over the spine as a decorative panel so that it sits on the front of the card and reaches around the back. It only needs to be approx three quarters of an inch. Then you could place some peeloffs down the edges on the panel to finish it off.

Although I have said this, the best way to get no puckering of the backing paper is to mark the score line on your card with a pencil. Stick the backing paper/border over the score line then score on the backing paper right the the backing paper and card, then fold your card. You should get a good finish.

If you are using the Hougie Board, as I do, then you should use the tool that comes with the board. That's what I do and haven't had any trouble yet. Do not use the point of the folding tool, or folder., but use the shaped side edge of the folder. Score gently several times back and front. I then fold the card against my steel ruler. I have not had any problems yet. John.
