Question Card problem

Hi All,

I am having a problem when I fold The pearl card in half. The coloured outside layer cracks showing white splits along the seam. Have you got any tips on how to prevent this from happening.

Hi Annemarie,

Yes I have but still splits. Ive also tried rubbing the card with a tumble dry sheet. That didn't work either.

Hi
I have found that some pearl card will not fold with out cracks. Think it's the quality of the card but some time the sheeper on are the best.

Are you scoreing once, hard, on each side? Sometimes you can have a better effect by scoreing lightly several times on each side to stretch the surface rather than break and crack the surface.

If the card surface is one that just won't score without cracking then you could try running a complementary coloured ink pad or marker pen along the edge to cover up the white core showing. You could take the same medium around all the edges to give some consistency to the finish of the card.

Hi Karin,

I do find the pearl card difficult to work with, especially if the gsm is quite high...

Hi Gwyneth,

I've just been looking on the internet about scoring on media and they've mentioned some spray which helps the scoring tool glide through the grooves... Maybe I should use a larger head or should I go smaller...

Hi Bubble

Something like Spray and Slide is meant more for dry embossing rather than just doing a quick score on a card to fold. A spray, or wiping with a tumble dryer sheet, shouldn't be needed for scoreing. It just makes embossing easier by spraying over the back of the card to make an embossing tool slip easier and acts as a lubricant. It wouldn't be used on the front of a card for scoring.

Every scoreing board I've had has come with a scoring tool of a suitable size for the groves on that board, so using a different tool may not be of the right size for the board.

If you are using just a scoreing tool and a ruller then you could try experimenting with sizes, but I do know that a very small ball tool is more likely to scratch and break the surface, and a very large ball tool won't produce a crisp fold. The end of a bone folder, depending on the bone folder, can work quite well. Yesterday I saw somebody demonstrating folding one type of card and for that she recomended scoreing back and fore several times on the back only, adding pressure gently each time. She also said not to burnish after folding as that was more likely to cause cracking. She wasn't using a pearlescent card, but the tip may work with your card.

Unfortunately, some card is just too think, or the texture or finish is such, that it will never score and fold cleanly.

Hi Gwyneth,

Thanks so much for getting back you've saved me some pennies. I will try the ruler method, I have been using the Hougie Board and I will also try a bigger head to see if it will make a difference.

Hi Bubble

I use the Hougie Board, with the tool that comes with it, and don't as a rule have any problems with cracking, but you do need to use the "Hougie Trick" of scoreing gently several times then flipping and scoreing on the other side and doing the same (unless the finish is such that it won't take scoring at all on the front.)
