| Computer died...........
on Christmas Day, had just checked my bingo numbers and logged off. Then tried to turn it on again in the evening to check again - and nothing - dead as a dodo. It was 10 years old and I have given it a lot of use these last couple of years.
One of my daughters was visiting for Christmas as they do- brought her tablet [a new all in one thingy that I don't really understand - but it does have internet access] with her so I was able to order a new one - an outlay I wasn't really ready for but hey can't do without a pc now can I.
Just got my son in law to set it up for me and have spent a couple of days finding my way around - windows 7 seems so different from my old XP.
I didn't listen to everyone else about backing up my work - did have most of my cup buys on a pendrive, but lost all my documents, photos, email addresses, etc. Will now listen to what everyone says about backing up your important stuff.
Anyway love to you all and hope you have a very happy and healthy 2012 xx |

AWWW Joyce, how dreadful xxx I've lost so many things over the years that I now go a tad OTT with the backing up of files lol, got an external hard drive, which you should invest in, got copies of stuff on CDs and all my pics stay on their original SD cards and I just buy new ones, hopefully I'll never go through the horror of losing all my important files and pics again xx Windows 7 is very different from XSP Joyce, but you'll get the hang of it in time xx and hopefully whichever email programme you used will have online back ups of your contact lists xxx TC Diane xx

Nooooo!!! I hate it when computers give up the ghost. Phooey! But that is AMAZING that it lasted you 10 years. I must be hard on mine because they last me, on average, about 2 years. I absolutely LOVE windows 7! Hope you will, too!

Joyce I was just thinking I hadn't seen you around! Was just going to send you a message and here you are! Not with good news either - computers huh - don't they drive you mad! LOL Great when they are working fine - SO frustrating when not!
Sorry you lost all your stuff. I used to back up but not regularly, lost some of my work in the summer but now do it every couple of days or more depending! I used to rely on my son to do it - he showed me how to do it and it's easy peasy!
Glad to see you around again! Enjoy your new toy! You'll soon get used to it!

I know how you feel Joyce, my laptop died on New Years Eve, I had been using it in the afternoon, turned it off, in the evening I tried to turn it on again and NOTHING dead as a dodo, I just spoke to the technician at the computer shop and he told me the mother board burnt out!!! how does that happen then? it was only 3 years old, but seems that is old for a laptop, unfortunately I'm not in a position to buy a new one so my son reconfigured an old German one which I'm using now, but all the letters and not where they are supposed to be and trying to find characters such as ?, and the @ sign has been trial and error, but i'm grateful it works so I can at least carry on where I left off, and I had backed up everything on usb sticks. Anyway, Joyce, glad you are back with us again. |

Hi Joyce,
That sounds like my worst nightmare. You must have been tearing your hair out(I would have done)I am pleased you have managed to get a new one and that you soon get use to it.That is a good age for a pc.Mine usually last approx 2 years, and over the years I have lost so much.I do try to remember to back up on an external hardrive, but MUST do it more often.
Take care.xx |

Hi Joyce,
Its so terrible when this happens and I really feel for you. Last year our computer died. We luckily had everything backed up so once we got the new computer, I started to transfer some of the stuff to the new computer. I managed to get my some of my business files onto the new computer, but the next day when I started the computer to finish getting the backup files, the backup harddrive died and I lost so much more.
I was beside myself as we had done the right thing and backed it all up. We have 3 harddrives for backup - one for craft, one for my business and one for all the music and photos. We were able to get the harddrive replaced as it was only 4mths old, but still didn't recover the information.
Two weeks later, the new computer died. I walked back into the shop, told some young wanna be what had happened who really didn't care. I then burst into tears as we thought we had done everything right. Now I am not the sort of women who uses tears to get things, but I must admit it does work (which was not my intention - I was just over it as this was the 3rd computer in 2yrs). We got an super upgrade - but I won't say how this computer is as I don't want to jinx it.
We now have this computer backed up on a built in backup system. Everything backed up onto harddrives. All my craft files backed onto USB and CDs. An all my business stuff on three harddrives.
Still - it doesn't matter how much you back things up, there is always the chance it will go. I had never considered what if the backup died
Luckily the guys at CUP are so wonderful, I know I can always get my sheets back. I also use my skydrive on my hotmail account to store really important templates and items to do with my business.
Some good news though - as the original computer was still under warrantly we sent it off to have a new harddrive put in. They sent it back but to our surprise - they had recovered everything except my business files. Hubby is now especially happy as he hooked the now spare computer to the sound system and plays his music through the speakers really loud (when I'm not home )
I really feel for you Joyce - its heartbreaking when it happens.
Take care

I was beginning to worry about you too - but wondered if you were so busy doing exciting Christmassy things. My laptop died on Christmas Eve and our desktop computer is really starting to groan (quite literally when we switch it on) and most of the usb ports don't work and the cd drive certainly doesn't, so we are holdng our breath. At least I can still get on the forum for now.
Happy New year and Happy New computer. |
