If you believe the newspaper we just lie around in the sun, drinking beer all day long (lol) !!! But in reality, it's a public holiday, it's a celebration of our nation's birthday a a western nation. Many families will get together to celebrate via bbq's and parties. It's a time when we, as a nation, give ourselves a pat on the back and reflect on all our achievements. Many people are honored with awards - Order of Australia, etc., it's a sort of mini Queens Birthday. Tonight there'll be plenty of fireworks and more parties. We live on a golf course and my husband Ron has just gone off down to the clubhouse to participate in the raising of the flag ceremony, his cousin will be playing the national anthem on the bagpipes, and there'll be the obligatory sausage sizzle afterwards. While it is a time of rest and relaxation, unfortunately hungry bellies dont have a holiday so Ron and I will be down at the local cafe (along with about 20 others), helping to cook and serve a meal for the disadvantaged in our area. It is a fun day and thankfully sunny but not too hot (about 80F today).

Happy Australia Day!!
I live in a different part of Australia to Gabrielle and for us by the looks of it we'll be moving cattle as another flood hits us. We're not as bad off as Queensland but it's something we don't need.
But to all the other Aussies here, have a wonderful celebration |

Happy Australia Day to all the Aussies, whether you're on our shores or overseas!!
Bit wet here to have a full on outside BBQ but no doubt there will be quite a few happening around the place.
The official public/community celebrations here have been cancelled, as have quite a lot here in Qld today because of the weather.
But Aussies love a party so there will be a lot of parties in yards around the place instead. |

We had the most horrendous storm all night but it's stopped now, although it looks like it's gathering strengh for another go fairly soon. But we're "Bushies" - we don't care !
Going to clean up the over-blown garden shortly, then it's off to lunch with my 4 Chinese families before going to the Citizenship Ceremonies as my last adult student becomes an Australian Citizen today.Maybe a short rest before going to the club for the Barbie & fireworks tonight. YAHOO !!!

Gillian, I don't quite know what to say to you, other than my prayers are for and with you all up there. Just when you seemed to have recovered from one catastrophe along comes another. But Aussies are strong and will get over this. It's at times like this that I have to take stock and count my own blessings (of which there are many). Take care and look after yourself. I love your heart to spend time with your 4 Chinese families in the midst of all this turmoil.
