Renewing driving licence photo and not living in the UK

Has anyone had any experience of doing this. Our son lives in and works out of a foreign country (but still regards his UK home as the family house). On the website for renewing his photo it says he must give the address where he has lived for the last three years. Does anyone know if this will mean he will lose his UK driving licence?

I hope I am worrying about nothing.

Does he have residency in the foreign country? (i.e. signed up as a resident? ) If so I would think (I don't know for certain) that he would lose his UK licence.

If he returns to UK on and off during the year (spending weeks at a time) and has not become a Resident, then I would think he could class himself as "living in UK" but working abroad. Each country seems to have different laws about this.

Why don't you go to a Citizen's Advice Centre and ask them. They may be able to help you.

I am from the UK and live in Spain and have got Residency here and if I could drive I would have to have a Spanish Driving Licence. Although all UK licences have the EU sign so theoretically we should not have to change our licence as we live in a EU country.

Hope you manage to sort it out for him.

I have lived in Tenerife for over 18 years and have had a Uk licence up until recently, then I decided as I am resident here I would change to a Spanish Licence simply because its like a credit card with my photo and fingerprint on it so can by used instead of a passport when using a credit/Debit card. but my husband lost his british licence a few years ago and applied for a new one, stating that he was resident in Spain, and he recieved a new British licence, no questions asked. as the law has changed here now if you are resident you can have a british licence stamped by the Spanish Traffic office but it is only valid for 5 years then you are supposed to replace it with a Spanish one if you are staying here, it is a very grey area because of the European Uniuon Laws, but I know of lot of British expats who prefer to kep the English Licence and have had no problem doing so. hope this helps, have ou gone on to the DVLC website, or residents abroad website, gives advice on all this sort of thing, m Laptop is broken and I canīt access the stuff on my hard drive otherwise I would have sent you the links, see if I can find them for you......xx

My suggestion would be to phone the DVLA. They will give you all the correct Gen. You can't beat straight from the horses mouth!! Take care and all the very best to you and yours, John.
