We have a couple of wild pheasants (Phill - who limps and his friend Peter who doesn't!) who visit our garden regularly. They hang about under the sunflower heart bird feeder waiting for the Greenfinches and Goldfinches who are messy eaters to drop them some lunch!!
Oddly we've never had any hen pheasants visit us!!
I have 49 ex-battery hens, they came to us in a very sorry state, but they have all re feathered now & look gorgeous. We keep them in the orchard at the bottom of the garden. Some of the eggs are sold as we cant eat them all, & it helps pay for their food. We would keep the hens even if they never laid another egg as they are such amazing characters. To think how these birds started their lives its lovely to see them out enjoying the sunshine.
we have 3 chickens not sure what breed they are, they came from a place with loads of different breeds running around, think the 2 are rode island called hetty and betty, we also have a grey one called gerty, they lay eggs all different sizes. but their real value is there character, they are great fun my kids love them and they are very cheeky betty sneeks in to the house and makes herself comfy on my partners chair.
I started out wanting to rescue ex batts and had 2 but when one dies I had a very sad chook so had to get more. There were no ex batts being rescued so had to get posh hens. We don't have them for the eggs but obviously that is a bonus. The chooks are such wonderful pets and do become very friendly.
My partner and I want to get a couple of chickens one day, and a goat and some pigs, but we're in a second floor flat at the moment so I'll just have to wait a while till we get a house. We'll be like Barbara and Tom from the 'Good Life'. I cant wait.
